Betty Stone Leonard, 93, of Bonlee passed away peacefully on May 27, 2018 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Mrs. Leonard was born in Chatham County on April 22, 1925, the daughter of Henry J. and La Verna Walters Stone. She was a member of Edward Hill Friends Meeting where over the years she served on numerous committees, was a Sunday School teacher, and Clerk of Monthly Meeting.

Betty was a public school educator for more than thirty years. She graduated from Elon College and later received her certification in Library Science from UNC-G. During her career Betty touched many lives, teaching at Silk Hope, Goldston, Bonlee and Chatham Central High School. She enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening, and sewing, but will be most remembered for her strong faith in God and her deep and abiding love for her family.

Mrs. Leonard was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph H. Leonard, Sr.; her parents; her brother, Henry J. Stone, Jr.; and her sister, Dot S. Patat.

She is survived by her daughter Janet L. Walters and husband, Jackie of Bonlee; her son Ralph H. Leonard, Jr. and wife, Mary Gray of Chapel Hill; her sister, Ann S. Tew of Raleigh; her brothers Jim Stone and wife, Pat of Siler City and J. Ed Stone and wife, Gloria of Murrell's Inlet, SC; her grandchildren Michelle Evans (Matt), Nichole Conrad (Josh), Brooks Leonard (Jean), and Laura Leonard (fiancé Michael Clark); her great-grandchildren Nova and Keller Evans and Henry and Charles Leonard; and several nieces and nephews.

The family is especially grateful for the loving kindness of her devoted caregivers.

The family will receive friends Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 4:30 to 6:30 at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City. The funeral service will be on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Edward Hill Friends Meeting, 92 Ed Leonard Road, Siler City with Pastor Josh Conrad officiating.
