Wilber Cancel "W.C." Campbell, Jr., 77, of Campbell Road, Bear Creek passed away at his home on Monday, March 2nd.
Mr. Campbell was born in Chatham County on August 4, 1937, the son of Wilber Cancel and Lula Beal Campbell. He graduated from Goldston High School in 1955 and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a retired carpenter having worked with Henry Shaw Builders and later with San Lee Builders. He was a member of Meroney United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years and was assistant chairman of the administrative council, cemetery committee, and church trustee as well as many other church projects. "Dub" as many knew him, was very close to his high school classmates and helped organize their many class reunions. Dub also enjoyed hunting with his grandson and enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren. He loved his church family and community and was involved in numerous construction and volunteer projects to help other people. Throughout his sickness, Dub was more concerned with how others were doing and if there was anyone that needed his help. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, J.L. Campbell, and sister, Sally Faye Sasser.
He is survived by one son, Dwayne Campbell and wife Angela, of Bear Creek, NC; daughter, Lisa C. Hart and husband Tommy of Gulf, NC; grandson, Austin Campbell; granddaughters, Emma Grace and Charlee Anne Hart; brother, Jerry Campbell and wife Jane, of Goldston, NC and sister, Betty Campbell of Bear Creek, NC, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their gratitude to his wonderful caregivers, Jane Aschenauer, JoAnn Womble, Virginia Paige, Ava Bayles, and Dee Dee Moffitt, along with his nephew, Ronnie Sasser.
The family will receive friends at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 4th from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and other times at the home of his son, Dwayne, 1447 Vernie Phillips Road, Bear Creek.. The funeral will be Thursday, March 5th at 2:00 PM at Meroney United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Whitaker officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
