Sadie Lee Murphy Hockenberry, 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 1, 2016 in Siler City, NC. She was born on September 10, 1922 in Union County, North Carolina, to parents Georgia and and George “Lee” Murphy.
Sadie met her husband Ralph “Eddie” Hockenberry in 1942 while working at the drug store in Monroe, NC. Eddie was in the Army. They were married on August 15, 1942 and were married for 55 years. Sadie spent the next 20 years as an army wife. After Eddie retired from the army, they settled in Pasadena, Maryland, eventually retiring to Florida for five years, and then returning to Pasadena. Sadie lived the last six years in Siler City, NC.
Sadie was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Kathleen “Kat” Barbee, Mildred “Mickey” Pass, and Frances, “Frankie” Lundy, her brother, Donald Wolfe, and also her husband, Ralph Edward Hockenberry, who passed away in 1997. She is survived by her son, Ron Hockenberry, daughter Debbie DeGonia and husband Scott, granddaughter Sandy Hockenberry Johnson and husband Bobby, grandson Danny Hockenberry and wife Kimba, granddaughter Julie Hockenberry Hicks and husband Isaac, and grandson Steve DeGonia. Sadie was also blessed with six great grandchildren, Amber Gaines and husband Chad, Ryan Johnson and wife Brittney, Heather Johnson and boyfriend Daniel Doss, Danielle Hockenberry and boyfriend Jacob Havard, Coda Hockenberry and Gage Hockenberry. She also was blessed with four great, great grandchildren, Bradly Gaines, Noah Johnson, Liam Gaines and Brooklyn Johnson. She is also survived by her brother Wayne Wolfe and wife Bobbie, and sister Helen Helms and husband Don, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Smith and Buckner Funeral Home, Siler City, NC assisted the family. Friends visited Thursday October 6, 2016 from 10-11:00am with a service following at 11:00am in the Barranco & Sons,P.A Severna Park Funeral Home , Severna Park, MD. Pall bearers were Scott DeGonia, Steve DeGonia. Danny Hockenberry, Coda Hockenberry, Gage Hockenberry and Jacob Havard. Services were concluded with the loving interment in the Cedar Hill Cemetery where Sadie joined her husband in their final resting place here on earth.
