Murray Milton Andrew
Murray Milton Andrew, 86, of Siler City, NC died Tuesday August 25th 2015 at Genesis Healthcare. He was born in Chatham County on June 18, 1929, the son of the late James Harvey and Mary Blanche Lindley Andrew.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a brother, Donald Keith Andrew, Sr.
He attended Silk Hope High School and went to Campbell Junior College in the summer of 1946 to graduate from high school. He graduated from Campbell Junior College with an Associate of Arts degree in 1948. He received a B.S. in Science from UNC at Chapel Hill in 1950. He received a Master of Education in Secondary Education and Administration with a Graduate Teaching Certificate in Mathematics, Science, and Administration from UNC Chapel Hill in 1956.
He began his 35 year career in education at Silk Hope School from 1949-1951. He taught at Goldston High School 1951-1953 and 1955-1957, Jordan Matthews High School 1957-1965, Sandhills Community College 1965-1967 and again at Jordan Matthews High School 1967-1970.
His career in education was interrupted from 1953-1955 when he served in the U.S. Army assigned to Special Services with the Air Force. During his military service, he was stationed in England, Austria and Germany as a CBR officer for the 804th Engineering Battalion in England.
1970 he became the principal of Jordan Matthews High School until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement, he was a library assistant at Wren Memorial Library.
His passion for education and his care and concern for all students was evident to all who knew him as a teacher or principal. He delighted in attending high school reunions to visit with "his students."
He was an avid gardener and took special pride in his roses. He enjoyed researching, writing and publishing books on genealogy. He was a member of the Chatham County Historical Society.
He was a birth-right member of the South Fork Friends Meeting and joined First Baptist Church in Siler City in 1957. At First Baptist Church he was Superintendent of the Intermediate Sunday School Department for 12 years, a Deacon for 12 years, serving two years as Chairman of the Board. He was a member and teacher of the Roy A. Edwards Sunday School Class. After his retirement from the school system, he wrote the book "One Hundred Year History, First Baptist Church of Siler City" and assisted in writing another book about First Baptist Church named "Right Before Our Eyes" with Mrs. Cecilia Budd Grimes.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Barbara Burke Andrew of Siler City, a son, Steven Andrew of Raleigh, a daughter, Yvonne Andrew of Siler City; Granddaughter Lauren Hadley of Fuquay-Varina; Grandson Benjamin Hadley and wife Melissa of Graham; Great grandchildren Ella and Bryce Hadley; brothers, Blake Andrew and wife Rebecca of Snow Camp, Phillip Andrew and wife Pauline of Snow Camp; sister Jane Lindley and husband Joe Bill of Snow Camp and a sister-in-law Jane Andrew of Lynchburg Virginia.
The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC on Friday August 28, 2015 from 6:00-8:00PM. The celebration of his life will be conducted at First Baptist Church on Saturday August 29, 2015 at 2:00PM. Burial will follow the service at Rives Chapel Baptist Church, 4338 Rives Chapel Church Road in Siler City with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC 27344 or West Chatham Food Pantry.
