Melvin Jackson Vest, Sr., 88, of 488 Bonlee-Bennett Road, P O Box 206, Bonlee died Saturday, November 19, 2011 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst. Mr. Vest was born September 18, 1923, the son of Craven Jackson and Ethel Pankey Vest.
Mr. Vest was a native of Richmond County and a member of Bonlee Baptist Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and member of the Adult Sunday School Class #3. He was past Master and a member of Mt. Vernon Masonic Lodge # 143 A.F.& A.M. He was President of Vest Textiles Machinery and Parts and a WW II Navy veteran. Mr. Vest was an avid bowler, loved to fish and play golf. Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian Binkley Vest and a grandson, Andrew Tillman, brothers, Everett, Charles, Edwin, Fred, Robert and Baxter Vest.
He is survived by two daughters: Kathy V. Horton and husband, Earl of Cowpens, SC, Melva Anne Viscarra of Durham, NC; three sons: Johnny C. Binkley and wife, Charlene of Raleigh, NC, Robert Tillman and wife, Irene of Goldston, NC, Melvin Vest, Jr. of Apex, NC; two sisters: Elsie Burns of Archdale, NC, Roberta Locklear of Laurinburg, NC; a brother: Richard Vest of Archdale, NC; ten grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Monday, November 21, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC, and other times at the family home. The funeral will be Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Bonlee Baptist Church with Rev. Darrell Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, with Masonic rites and military rites.
