Mary Rachel Hall Allred June 3, 1930 - December 15, 2011
Rachel went to be with her Lord and Savior after a hard fought battle with Alzheimers. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer G. Hall, Sr. and Artis B. Hall. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Homer G. Hall, Jr. and a sister, Jacqueline H. Johnson. She is survived by her loving husband, of 59 years, Harold H. Allred and many loving nieces, nephews and friends.
Rachel was a graduate of Watts School of Nursing, UNC-Chapel Hill School of Nursing and earned her PHD in 1991 from Walden University. She taught nursing at UNC-Greensboro and upon retirement she was appointed Assistant Professor Emeritus. Rachel received the NCAOHN "Nurse of the Year Award" in 1987. Rachel was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Siler City where she was a member of the choir, a member of the home missions group, former deacon and taught the same Sunday School Class for over 30 years, which is now named for her. Among her other accomplishments she was past president of the WMU, past president of Alpha Delta Kappa, previous Worthy Matron of the local Eastern Star Chapter, a member of the Daughters of the American Confederacy and a member of the local garden club just to name a few of her activities. Rachel also served on the board of trustees to build the new Chatham Hospital in Siler City. Rachel was a faithful and loyal servant to God, her family and the community. Even after retirement she continued to serve others. She volunteered to administer free vaccines in the community to those less fortunate. She also could be found outside WalMart ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. She was truly loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
The family will receive friends Saturday, December 17, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church, 314 N. 2nd Ave., Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart and Rev. Jim Wall officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Siler City.
