Mary Decie Brower Paschal died on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City, North Carolina. Decie was the wife of Donald Lee Paschal, who preceded her in death on May 4, 1992.
Decie was born on August 2, 1929, on her family farm in Randolph County, North Carolina. She was the youngest of three children born to William Alfred and Mae Lambert Brower. She attended Coleridge School, where she was the point guard on the women's basketball team. After graduation, she attended Women's College in Greensboro. Decie received her business course degree in 1948 and worked in the front offices and payroll departments of several local businesses over the years.
Decie married Don Lee on March 28, 1948 (Easter Sunday). They welcomed daughter Gwen into the world the following year while living on the campus of Wake Forest College, where Don Lee was attending law school on the GI Bill. Decie and Don Lee later moved to Homewood Acres in Siler City, although she always loved the country and maintained her family home on Coleridge Road. Always a hard worker, she cared for both homes and yards herself until recent years.
Decie was an avid bowler, as well as a diehard fan of the perpetual underdog Wake Forest Demon Deacons basketball team. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Siler City. She was a voracious reader and loved doing word puzzles. Later in life, she found great joy in caring for her Shih-Tzus, Dolly and Sweetie. Most of all, however, Decie was devoted to her family. She demonstrated her love and generosity in many ways, including cooking her amazing chicken and dumplings and unforgettable Thanksgiving turkey and dressing.
Decie is survived by her daughter Gwen Paschal Holt, and son-in-law, Mike, of Siler City; brother, Clayton Law Brower of Kernersville; granddaughters, Donna Weaver of Siler City, Krista Miller of Peachtree City, Georgia, Mary Clayton Liles of Chapel Hill, and Scarlett Liles of Siler City; great-grandchildren, Michael Ryan Thorpe, Joseph Lozada, Mackenzie Miller, and Maeve Miller.
The funeral will be Friday, October 31, 2014 at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 314 North Second Avenue, Siler City with Rev. Tony Capehart officiating. Burial will follow in Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Bear Creek. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Paschal, 901 West Sixth Street, Siler City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Chatham Food Pantry, 126 Village Lake Road, Siler City, NC 27344.
