Lonnie Ray Hamm, 64, of Bear Creek died Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro.
Mr. Hamm was born in Alleghany County on November 13, 1949 the son of John T. and Lena (Sheets) Hamm. He was a member of Oakley Baptist Church where he taught Sunday School Classes and had served as a deacon. Lonnie was a graduate of Alleghany High School, received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of South Carolina and his Masters Degree from Western Carolina University. Lonnie was owner and President of Cable Express and had taught economics classes at several universities. He retired from Randolph Community College where he served as Director of the Small Business Center. Lonnie had served as past president of both the Bonlee School PTA and the Bonlee Recreation Association. He was a member of Chatham Central High School Booster Club, announced recreational football games and also assisted in coaching teams of all age groups. He enjoyed times spent with his sons, farming, riding dirt bikes and spending time in classrooms teaching. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Carol Walton and a nephew, Chris Walton
He is survived by three sons: Justin Hamm and wife, Beth, Kevin Hamm and Daniel Hamm all of Bear Creek, NC; one brother: Bob Hamm and wife, Wanda of Sparta, NC; uncle, Okey Sheets; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends Friday, October 10, 2014 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. A memorial service will be Saturday, October 11, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Oakley Baptist Church with Rev. Bob Wachs officiating. A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 12, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Landmark Church in the Whitehead Community, Sparta, NC.
