Judy Spence Strickland was born August 3, 1941 to George Broughton Spence and Lillie Patterson Spence, she was raised in Lillington, North Carolina. Judy was one of 9 children. They were brought up on a farm in Harnett County, North Carolina. Judy taught elementary school for 5 years and was a Dropout Prevention Counselor. Judy was active in her church, First Presbyterian Church and a former member of First Assembly Church and C-4 Church. She was very active in her community, volunteering with Hospice of Randolph and CUOC and was the previous chairperson with Big Sweep of Randolph County. Judy loved hiking and being outdoors. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, George Broughton Spence, Sr. and Lillie Patterson Spence formally of Lillington, NC; son, Preston Strickland formerly of Asheboro; brothers, James Robert Spence and wife Marilyn Younce Spence formally of Orlando, FL, George Broughton Spence,Jr. and wife Carol Todd Spence formally of Owings, MD; sisters, Madge Spence Ayscue and husband Austin Ayscue formally of Henderson, NC, Faye Spence Powell and husband Leon Max Powell formally of Raleigh, NC, Lottie Spence Newton formally of Washington, WV; and a brother-in-law Charlie Cain, Jr. formally of Fayetteville, NC. Judy is survived by her husband Graham Kent Strickland; son, Barry Strickland and wife Erin of Greensboro, NC; daughter-in-law, Keri Strickland-Ward of Apex, NC; and grandchildren, Pierce Strickland of Greensboro, NC, and Lori Strickland and Nathan Strickland both of Apex, NC Judy's surviving siblings are Ruth Spence Cain of Fayetteville, Betty Sue Spence Stephens and husband John Tommy Stephens of Raleigh, Philip Spence and wife Betty West Spence of Lillington, NC. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018 at 2:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 420 West Walker Avenue in Asheboro with Rev. Brian Gawf officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Randolph, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, NC 27204-0009 or the Alzheimer's Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 4600 Park Rd., Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209. Pugh Funeral Home in Asheboro is serving the Strickland family.
