Joseph Craig Kelly, 37, of Bear Creek, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at UNC Chapel Hill, surrounded by family and loved ones. Craig entered surgery to remove an AVM he had since birth. Despite favorable odds, God had a different plan for him. Though we may never understand why someone so young and full of life was taken, Craig’s legacy of love and selflessness will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Born on November 13, 1987, in Lee County, Craig was the beloved son of Cynthia B. Kelly and Michael E. Kelly. Craig lived a life defined by love, generosity, and service to others. In his passing, he continued to give by donating his organs, offering hope and a second chance to those in need.
Craig graduated from Chatham Central High School, where he played football and formed lifelong friendships. Craig loved cooking, spending time riding side-by-side, and feeding fish at the family pond. He found joy in simple pleasures like trips to the beach and enjoying an ice-cold Cherry Coke Zero. Above all, he cherished his family.
Craig’s memory will be forever treasured by his mother, Cynthia Beaver Kelly, and stepfather, Barry Dark; his father, Michael E. Kelly; his brother, Michael Kelly his sister, Katie Dark; his maternal grandparents, Joseph “Joey” B. Beaver and Ann Beaver; his paternal grandfather, Clifford Kelly; his Great-Aunt, Jane Fisher; and his special family friend, Audrey Poe. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Eleonore Kelly and Great-Uncle, Danny Beaver.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, January 18th, 2025, from 2-4 pm, at Meroney Methodist Church.
Smith & Buckner Funeral Home is assisting the Kelly family during this difficult time.
