Joseph Alvin Smith, age 91, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully at UNC Hospice House on Saturday July 7th, 2018. Born to Javan and Annie Bare Smith on November 16, 1926. Joe was one of five children and is preceded in death by sister Betty Crews, and brothers: June, Jessie Earl and RD Smith all of Siler City. Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Virginia Woody Smith of Siler City; son, Lee Smith of Siler City and daughter, Teresa S. Piezzo (husband Larry) of Pittsboro; four grandchildren: Tina Smith, Joey Smith, Matthew Davis of Siler City and Master Sgt. USAF Brent Davis (wife Jerraca) of Charleston, South Carolina, and three great-grandchildren: Rylee, Lincoln and Grady: many beloved nieces and nephews and dear sister in laws.
Joe was owner of Siler City Oil Company. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the 20th Anti-Tank Company during the last phase of World War II.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jason Dickerson presiding along with nephew Rev. Michael Smith. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, on Monday, July 9, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 PM.
Joe was a devoted and faithful member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, serving within the choir, and various roles within the church. The Silk Hope Ruritan Club honored him with 58 years of service. He also served as past President of the Ruritan Club and coach of the Ruritan youth Baseball team. He was a charter member of the Silk Hope Fire Department.
Joe was proud to be a US Army Veteran. He spent much of his retirement years reconnecting with his Army friends across the country. He also had a love for antique cars and trucks and would not miss an opportunity to shine up his truck and ride in a parade proudly displaying the US Flag.
The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers at home during the past year, as well as UNC Hospice for their exceptional care during his last days.
