Joe Raeford Burke, 85, of Staley went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 2, 2020 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro. Raeford had spent the last thirteen years at Carillion (Elmcroft) Assisted Living in Asheboro.
Mr. Burke was born in Chatham County on July 6, 1934 the son of Georgie G. and Rosa (Stout) Burke. Raeford was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church, the Ixthus Sunday School Class and had served as an usher and on the recreation committee. Raeford had worked for Chatham Novelties and retired from Stout Chair Co.. He enjoyed wood working, crafting picture frames and cabinets. Raeford was a NASCAR fan especially Bill Elliott. He also enjoyed tinkering with lawn mowers and riding the kids around on the trailer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Langley Burke; sisters, Sarah Margaret Dunn, Roberta Phillips; brother, Stout Burke; brother-in-law, Tommy Langley.
Raeford is survived by his son, Ronnie Burke and wife, Shelia of Olivia; brother, Thurman Burke and wife, Emma Jean of Bear Creek; step-grandson, Ian Dickens; brother-in-law, Eugene Langley; sisters-in-law, Hilda McMasters, Marie Meacham, Linda McManus, Linda Langley; very special niece, Tammy Price;and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 8, 2020 from 2:00-3:00 PM at Sandy Branch Baptist Church, 715 Sandy Branch Church Road, Bear Creek. The funeral will follow Sunday at 3:00 PM at Sandy Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Marc Sanders and Rev. Jay Smoot. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sandy Branch Baptist Church or the Hospice House of Asheboro.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the CNAs and caregivers at Carillion (Elmcroft) for their years of care. A special thanks is also extended to the staff of Hospice of Asheboro for their care in his final days.
