James Philip Canterbury, 72, of Bear Creek went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February 9, 2015.
Mr. Canterbury was born in Blue Jay, West Virginia on April 3, 1942 the son of James Woodrow and Garnet Evelyn (Crook) Canterbury. He was an Army Veteran and employed by USF Holland Trucking Co. Philip was a member of Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church where he was a member of the Adult Sunday School Class and the building committee. He was a former member of the Chatham County Planning Board and a current member of the Board of Directors of Bonlee Fire Department. Philip enjoyed fishing, sports, time spent with his grandchildren and lending a helping hand to his family and friends when the need would arise. He also was co- owner/ operator of C & E Tours.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years: Pearl (Morrison) Canterbury; daughter: Beverly Leigh Canterbury of Asheville, NC; son: Steven P. and wife, Margaret "Marti" Canterbury of Newton, NC; sisters: Ruth C. Taylor , Jennie C. Freeland; brother: Charles "Pat" Woodrow Canterbury all of Daniels, W. VA; grandchildren, Casey Philip Canterbury of the home, James Robert and Jesse Adams Canterbury of Newton, NC.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 2981 Hwy 42, Goldston, NC and other times at the family home. The funeral will be Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church, 2981 Hwy 42, Goldston with Rev. Phillip Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
