James Clifton Brown, 81, passed away February 27, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Mr. Brown was the son of Reuben Brown and Melissa Purvis Brown. He was born in Randolph County N. C. on March 22, 1934. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandmother, Sarah Brown, who raised him and whom he loved dearly, and infant son, James Clifton Brown Jr. and brothers, Wilburn Brown, Stacy Brown and J. H. Brown. Clifton is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Etta Williams Brown of the home, sons, James Keith Brown and partner, Eric Diefenbach of New York, NY; Jeffery Brown and wife, Deanna Brown of Siler City, NC and daughter, Sarah Brown Moody and husband, Terry Moody of Siler City. Mr. Brown is also survived by twelve grandchildren; Scarlett Spencer, Alex Moody, James Andrew Moody, Stephen Moody, Laura Moody, McKayla Brown, Mary Grace Brown, Tyler Brown, Grant Brown, Madison Brown, Emma Brown and Bennett Brown. He is also survived by one great grandchild, Brody Dowd, a sister, Leah Brown Short, whom he loved dearly, of Bennett, two sister-in-laws, Rachel Creek and Jearline Brown and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Brown was a graduate of Bennett High School where he played football, basketball and baseball and once scored over 50 points in one basketball game. After high school, he served as a military policeman at Fort Jackson, S. C. After military service, Mr. Brown worked for 20 years at Kellwood Hosiery Mill in Siler City. He then went on to work as a supervisor at Rampon Hosiery Mill in Asheboro, N. C. and Acme McCrary Hosiery Mill in Siler City for almost 30 years.
Clifton was a member of Loves Creek Baptist Church where he was a deacon, Sunday school teacher and served on many committees. He enjoyed gardening, walking and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a good husband, wonderful father and very loving grandfather. He always loved doing for others, especially the elderly and never met a stranger. He was always there for his family and made everyone feel loved. Clifton was a very special man.
The family will receive visitors at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home Monday February 29, 2016 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Loves Creek Baptist Church, Siler City, N. C. Tuesday March 1, 2016 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors.
