Jack B. Elkins, 83, of Siler City died Monday, April 20, 2015 at his residence.
Jack was born in Chatham County on October 23, 1931 the son of Tatum and Alma Lambert Elkins. He was a member of Rives Chapel Baptist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class. Jack was also a member of the Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge # 143 A.M.F.M. and the North Carolina Sheriff Association. He was an Army paratrooper with the 42nd Airborne Division.. Jack served as Sheriff of Chatham County from 1978 until 1990. He was the first elected sheriff in 40 years. He was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, an outdoorsman, who enjoyed working with his hands, whether it be farming, gardening, mowing or building projects.
More than anything he was a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, who also loved his family, friends and community. He serviced as Sheriff to Chatham County with passion, dedication and pride.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ted Elkins and sister, Frances Langley.
He is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Cora Buckner Elkins; daughter, Beth Elkins Pollock of New Bern; grandchildren, Ally and Jason Pollock; brother, Jim Elkins and wife, Frances of Stafford, VA ; sisters, Margaret Vadersen of Virginia Beach, VA, Mary Cheek of Greensboro, NC and Florence Turner and husband, Charles of Siler City; sister-in-law, Irene Elkins.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 22, 2015 from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at Rives Chapel Baptist Church followed by the funeral at 2:00 PM with Rev. Luther Lemon and Rev. Tripp Foltz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.
