Ivan Ivan Bernard Mendenhall, 88, of Siler City died Friday, October 2, 2015 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.
Mr. Mendenhall was born on November 1, 1926 in Chatham County; the son of Jack B. and Queen McMasters Mendenhall. Ivan was a Navy veteran of WWII and was retired from the US Postal Service after 36 years and prided himself as a dependable mail carrier. He was a member of Piney Grove United Methodist Church and was a charter member and first president of the United Methodist Men's Club, and was a Sunday School Teacher for 35 years of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He served in 1973 as Building Chairman, also as Trustee and Treasurer. He was given the official title of Chief Chicken Cooker for the annual chicken supper. Ivan was also a member of the Civitan Club. His other enjoyments was gardening, especially his tomatoes which he shared with friends and family. He loved to travel down to Oak Island, cut wood, watch sports, play golf, and was an avid Duke Fan. Ivan is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bob Mendenhall.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years: Frances Wakefield Mendenhall, daughter: Cindy Mendenhall Davis of Siler City; a son: Larry I. Mendenhall and wife, Dottie of Siler City, NC, grandsons; Scott Mendenhall and wife, Kelly of Greensboro, NC; Mark Mendenhall and wife, Beth of Wilmington, NC, Mitchell Davis of Siler City, NC; great-grandchildren, Piper and Jack Thomas Mendenhall of Wilmington, NC;, Chloe and Keegan Mendenhall of Greensboro, NC, and Adelyn Davis of Siler City, a brother, Aubrey Mendenhall and wife, Kitty of Durham, NC.
The visitation will be Monday, October 5 from 6 to 8 PM at the Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 N. Second Avenue, Siler City, NC; and other times at the family home. The funeral will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday October 6. 2015 at Piney Grove United Methodist Church, 2343 Piney Grove Church Road, Siler City with Rev. Jim Folks officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
