Hugh Harold Johnson, 92, of Silk Hope Road, Siler City passed peacefully into the arms of God Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Hugh was a lifelong member of the Silk Hope Community, born in Chatham County on April 15, 1926 the son of Wade and Annie (White) Johnson. He was retired from the NCDOT after 30 years of service and was a cattle and poultry farmer. Hugh was a former member of Hickory Mountain Baptist Church and a current member of South Fork Friends Meeting and member of the William Penn Sunday School Class. In younger days he had taught a Sunday School Class of young boys and coached the South Fork softball team.
Hugh was a respected member of the community, serving as a Charter member of the Silk Hope Ruritan Club, a past president with 53 years of perfect attendance and 46 years of consecutive attendance and was a recipient of the Thomas Downing Fellowship Award. He was also a charter member and former Captain of the Silk Hope Volunteer Fire Department. Hugh also served as past president of the Silk Hope School PTA and was on the Board of Directors of Farm Bureau for more than 40 years.
Hugh was preceded in death by his wife, Meredith "Buddy" Wright Johnson; son, Danny Reid Johnson; his parents; sister, Doris Ellington; brothers, Glenn, Warren, Bruce, Herbert and Gary, Johnson.
He is survived by one daughter: Sandra J. Pickard (David) of Silk Hope; two sons: Richard Hugh (Dickie) Johnson (Rebecca) of Ramseur and Dennis Johnson of Welcome; two sisters: Linda Sipe (Jack) of Goldston and Kathryn Frazier of Liberty; two brothers: Don Johnson (Ann) of Bear Creek and Billy Howell (Connie) of Graham and; grandchildren, Sherry Norfleet (Robert), Danielle Cockrum, (James), Annie Mae King (Brent), Kristin Johnson (fiancé Bo Dickerson), Danny Johnson (Stepheni), Blake, Olivia and Cari Johnson; great-grandchildren, Heather, Ashley, Dave, Faith, Abby, Macee, and Russell Hugh and an extended family of beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Thursday, May 24, 2018 from 6:00-8:30 p.m. at Smith & Buckner Funeral Home, 230 North Second Avenue, Siler City, NC. The funeral will be Friday, May 25, 2018 at 3:00 PM at South Fork Friends Meeting, 359 South Fork-Bethel Road, Snow Camp with Andrew Needham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
