Henry Christian Vogel ,92, of 24201 Cherry, Chapel Hill died Wednesday, October 10, 2012 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill.
Mr. Vogel was born December 22, 1919 in Newark, NJ and was raised in the Weequahic neighborhood. His wife, Shirley Beckert Vogel preceded him in death on June 24, 1986. Mr. Vogel graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Master's degree from Columbia University, in chemical engineering. He served in the US Army during WWII in the Pacific Theatre and in 1946 joined Merck, Inc. where he worked for the next 25 years, followed by fifteen years at GAF and John Brown until retirement. Among his professional accomplishments were a patented method of recovering osmium and editorship of Fermentation and Biochemical Engineering Handbood, now in its third edition. An active member and deacon at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church, Henry resided in Plainfield and Scotch Plains before moving to NC in 2005.
He is survived by: Erika V. Hoffman (daughter) and husband, Dr. Byron J. Hoffman, Jr. of Chapel Hill, NC; Donna V. McReynolds (daughter) and husband, Jeffrey of Batavia, IL; Dr. Joseph Henry Vogel (son) of San Juan, Puerto Rico; Margaret V. Stottmeister (sister) of Forked River, NJ and Gertrude V. Graham (sister) of Tempe, AZ; grandchildren, Byron Jay Hoffman, III, Henry Maxwell Hoffman, Erik Christian Hoffman and wife, Jessica, Heather Marie Hoffman, Casey Mae Carlock, Maxine Shirley McReynolds and Robin Jo McReynolds.
Interment was October 13, 2012 beside his beloved wife at the Pleasantdale Cemetery in West Orange, NJ. The officiating clergy was Reverend Lynn Santulli of Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church.
