Fred Haskal Poston of Siler City passed away on Wednesday, May 7. He was born June18, 1927 in Statesville. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Rachel Gilbert Poston, and a sister Peggy Summers.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday May 10at 2 PM at the First United Methodist Church of Siler City, NC officiated by Rev. Clyde Denny.
Fred was a graduate of Wake Forest College and UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He came to Siler City as a math teacher and coach. He served as an educator in the Chatham County School system for 32 years. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member of the Joyner-Brewer Sunday school class, and a former member of the sanctuary choir. He was a member of the Lions Club for 50 years and was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow. Fred was an avid sportsman and enjoyed swimming, tennis and golf. After retirement, he enjoyed many wonderful times at the beach and traveling across the country.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janice Alexander Poston and three children, Jan Guenther and husband Mark of Jamestown, Charles Poston and wife Kathy also of Jamestown, and Thomas Poston and wife Debbie of Albemarle.
One of his greatest joys in life was spending time with his grandchildren, Robert (Allison) Guenther of Raleigh, Andrew Guenther (fiancée Melissa Martin) of Charlotte, Page Poston Gleeson (Ryan) of High Point, Marley and Cal Poston of Jamestown, Michael Poston of Raleigh, Chaney Poston of Boone, Rachel and Stephen Poston of Albemarle. He will also be missed by his beloved dog, CJ.
Memorials may be made to the FUMC general fund or the Janice and Fred Poston Scholarship fund at FUMC which was started in 2013 by their children and grandchildren to honor their lifelong commitment to education.
