Mr. Clyde "Coot" Goldston, 81, fought his final battle against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, October 12, 2023, at the VA Hospital in Durham, NC.
Clyde David Goldston was born August 8, 1942, to the late Robert Lee Goldston and Maggie J. Alston in Chatham County NC.
Vietnam would be the first of many battles Clyde would face throughout his life. He honorably served a nation who struggled to honor their warriors during a confusing time. Clyde kept those battles private and would rarely reflect upon the horrors he and so many of his brothers-in-arms faced, not wanting to upset those who loved him. Clyde was that way. He considered others before himself. In each task or job, he took, he worked hard and diligently, living the example of honor and respect, that he expected from others.
He retired from the Road Crew division of the Department of Transportation. Most people knew him as a football coach. Clyde organized a "Midget" football league with Siler City local community kids. After retirement, he would help Coach Phil Senter the Jordan Matthews High School football team for the next 20 years.
In 1978, Clyde met and married the love of his life, the former Beverly McClain. He was a loyal and devoted husband, a loving father and a doting grandfather, bursting with pride and joy at the sight of his granddaughters.
In addition to his wife of 45 years, Clyde is survived by his daughters, Gabrielle Goldston and Chaquel Goldston; his stepdaughter, Raquel McClain-Johnson; and his granddaughters, Iniya Johnson and Malia Johnson and his brother, James "Rock" Alston.
Whether in a jungle, on a football field or in a hospital room, Clyde Goldston never gave up his fight.
You have fought the good fight of faith. May our Lord welcome you home with "Well done, thy good and faithful servant."
