Alton Palmer Gaines, 89, of Siler City died Sunday, February 23, 2014 at Randolph Hospice House, Asheboro. Mr. Gaines was born in Chatham County on December 12, 1924, NC the son of John Thomas and Mattie (Hancock) Gaines. He an Army veteran of WWII, a member of Antioch Baptist Church and was the owner/ operator of a logging business. Alton enjoyed playing cards and was known for his ability to tell a story. He was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Allred Gaines; son, Jerry Gaines; daughter, Patsy G. Carter; sister, Mary Lee Powers; brothers, Oren Gaines and John T. Gaines, Jr., Bill and Fred Gaines. He is survived by two daughters: Deborah Gaines of Asheboro, NC, Sharon G. Gray of Sophia, NC; four sisters: Louise G. McLaughlin and husband, Buddy , Ella G. Brower and husband, Jim , Frankie G. Bridges , Betty G. Stone and husband, Dennis all of Siler City, NC; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to all who have been supportive during Alton's illness. A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, 3835 Bonlee-Carbonton Road, Goldston with Ritchie Nall officiating.
